Tips for getting pregnant

While it comes as a wonderful surprise for some, it's a long journey for others: getting pregnant. We've compiled a few tips for getting pregnant. Want to read along?

Take vitamins:
Folic acid and vitamin D are recommended if you're trying to conceive. Folic acid is good for the baby, so build up your intake beforehand.  Folic acid reduces the risk of, for example, a cleft lip, spina bifida, and/or a cleft palate in your child.

Health:
A healthy lifestyle is crucial when trying to conceive. This increases your chances of conceiving. Not only is it important to be healthy physically (eat from the five-a-day food pyramid daily), but mental health is also a top priority.

Alcohol and smoking:
Smoking and alcohol reduce your chances of getting pregnant! Did you know? Alcohol increases estrogen in your body, which in turn affects your menstrual cycle. It's therefore wise to avoid it completely. This also applies to your partner, by the way. Sperm counts and their quality are better when you don't smoke or drink.

Fertility
As a woman, you're most fertile until you're 30. After 30, your egg count decreases, and quite rapidly. It's recommended to have children before age 35. It's important to carefully monitor your menstrual cycle and calculate your ovulation.

No rush
Getting pregnant can take a long time for many of us. This is perfectly fine. Don't lose heart! You don't want to start your pregnancy stressed. Enjoy the process!
